Waiuku often referred to itself as "The Port of Franklin" as a steamer went three times a week to Onehunga

Local Shipping firm Bradney & Binds

Fraser had built his first marine steam engine in 1867 for the coastal packet Tauranga.
In 1872 he delivered two sets of compound surface-condensing engines and high-pressure boilers -
the first of their kind to be built in Auckland - for the locally built steamers Southern Cross and Rowena.
all locally built ships had been constructed of wood, but on 20 November 1876 George Fraser
launched the first iron vessel constructed in Auckland, the Rotomahana.
The firm used the ship for the Auckland--Thames trade, where it continued to run for many years.

Wanganui

'When the European settlers first arrived in New Zealand they followed the example on the Maori and used the many rivers of New Zealand as highways. This lasted until the advent of rail and  good roadsThe Wanganui river was advertised as "The Rhine of Maoriland" and tourists would share its scenic lengths with cargoes of farm supplies and livestock

There was a shore whaling station at Castlecliff that worked for three years..Captain Kenneth Matheson had a ship building yard on the banks of the Tutauka stream..The first river ferry was between Parua creek (near Shakespeare Cliff)  and Market Place This ferry was later moved down to Victoria Street/Campbelltown..')
